Deira Clock Tower: History, Architecture, Location and Visitor Guide

Deira Clock Tower

The Deira Clock Tower is a historic clock tower located in Deira, Dubai, with a unique four-arch design and a central clock face. It was constructed in the 1960’s, when Dubai was growing at a rapid pace, and gained a strong association with Al Maktoum Bridge and Dubai Creek. The tower was a significant transport hub, linking the city of Deira to the rest of the rapidly expanding urban area. Today it is a familiar emblem of early modern Dubai and old Dubai. It is a public place to view the landmark and is close to major roads, commercial areas, and public transit.

Why Deira Clock Tower Matters in Dubai

The landmark is significant not just for its appearance. In the early years of urban expansion, when Deira was one of the busiest spots in the city, it was strategically sited at a key transport hub.

The UAE Ministry of Culture describes the structure as a marker that signified that people were crossing the creek and entering into Deira. It was located where key roads intersected with Al Maktoum Bridge, Dubai Municipality, and the port, and thus formed part of the growing urban network that makes up Dubai.

The clock tower was one of the most recognizable buildings in the city before the era of skyscrapers and mega-developments took over Dubai. The National mentions that it used to be a depiction of Dubai until the Burj Al Arab and Burj Khalifa cemented Dubai’s international impression.

It has also seen a lot of changes around it, and its importance has persisted. The roads opened up and the traffic grew, as did the surrounding district, but the landmark was still a familiar landmark, both for residents and visitors.

History of the Landmark

The story of the clock tower is intricately linked with Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum and a huge clock that was presented to him by Sheikh Ahmad Al Thani, the then Ruler of Qatar.

The National says the clock was gifted to Sheikh Rashid in the 1960s. The large-timepiece gave rise to the concept of a public building that would be dedicated to showcasing such a large clock.

When was the tower built?

There are slight variations in the building date given by sources and history.

According to Visit Dubai, the clock tower was constructed in 1963 and Dubai Municipality has referred to it as a 1963 construction. The National dates it to 1965, and the UAE Ministry of Culture gives it as 1968.

Therefore, it would be more correct to say that it is a landmark of the sixties rather than giving one date as a fixed point. The majority of the historical documentation dates its construction to the early/mid-1960s.

The site was carefully selected. Deira was a significant trading center and the tower was located close to Al Maktoum Bridge that was the main trade route to Bur Dubai from Deira. It was also placed where commuters from Dubai Creek or the fast-developing international airport could view it.

The connection with Al Maktoum Bridge

The connection with Al Maktoum Bridge

The Al Maktoum Bridge was a significant element in the landmark’s historic significance.

The bridge was opened in 1963 and was used to connect Deira and Bur Dubai by road. The city’s movement of goods and people changed between both sides of the city, and the clock tower was established as a visual landmark at the Deira end of this key route.

The connection between the bridge and the tower is why the structure was much more than a decorative clock. From the outset, it was a part of Dubai’s transportation network and its identity.

Who Designed the Clock Tower?

Two Architects in the Design History.

According to the UAE Ministry of Culture, the concept sketch was executed by the UAE’s Otto Bulard, while the design and construction of the structure was handled by Ziki Homsi of Architecture Design Construction.

The National also names the Syrian architect Zaki Al Homsi as the designer and builder. Previous versions tie Otto Bulard to the original idea.

The building is remarkable in that it is not decorated in any elaborate fashion. Four sweeping concrete arches rise from where they meet and gather around the clock faces, providing a good silhouette with the lower portion remaining open.

That openness was for a good reason. According to the Ministry of Culture, the thickness of the base meant the roundabout still allowed traffic and sight lines to flow around it, whilst maintaining the clock’s visibility.

Architecture and Design Features

Architecture and Design Features

The architectural style of the tower embodies the changing times of the sixties in Dubai.

It is designed to be both modern and simple, while also incorporating elements of regional architecture, such as the arches. Unlike architects who covered the building with decorative elements, the structure was kept simple in order to make the monument recognizable.

The four large arches support the clock. The curved geometry of the structure provides the tower with its unique appearance and enables the monument to be seen as open from various angles.

The center of the composition are the clock faces themselves. Later improvements also account for the current appearance, which is not necessarily the original.

The UAE Ministry of Culture states that the building is representative of modernism in the region and that it is associated with the City Beautiful Movement, which was about the beautification and monumentalization of civic structures in the urban context.

Is the design inspired by an oil-drilling structure?

One explanation of the shape of the tower is that the arches are an oil-drilling device or an oil-related symbol.

There is no historical proof that this interpretation is accurate. In a report on Otto Bulard’s design, Khaleej Times quoted engineer Edgar Bublik as saying the design was not an oil-drilling bit but was his own.

There is some significance to this difference, as the tower is occasionally misdescribed as a deliberate attempt to create a symbol for oil.

Renovations and Major Changes

Over the years, the structure has been extensively restored.

Beach sand used in the original construction was high in salt, and this was partly responsible for the deterioration of the original concrete. The structure suffered from corrosion, resulting in repairs and further extensive rebuilding.

The exact dates and magnitude of each stage of rebuilding vary in the historical record. According to the National, the tower has been rebuilt since it began degrading in the 1980s; other historical sources mention reconstruction and strengthening of the tower in the 1980s.

The building was also relocated several metres to accommodate with the expansion of the Dubai road network and newly installed traffic facilities.

The clock mechanism

The clock is also different.

The clock faces were changed in 2008 with Omega models. The upgraded system was described in contemporary news reports as being based on GPS technology to make timekeeping more accurate.

The change shows the preservation of the overall form of the landmark.

The 2023 Roundabout Renovation

This was a major recent improvement, which was not just a replacement for the historic building but centred around the surrounding Clock Tower Roundabout.

In 2023, Dubai Municipality finished a redevelopment project valued at AED 10 million. The work involved landscaping, lighting, painting and upgrading the fountain.

The fountain is also being revitalized with a smart sensor, which can adapt to wind speed variations by changing water jets. This brings contemporary technology to an area that is focused on a landmark of the early modern development of Dubai.

The refurbishment is part of an overall strategy to conserve historic buildings whilst enhancing the public spaces and amenity of the region.

Where Is Deira Clock Tower Located?

The landmark is located in Deira, Dubai, at the cross point of Umm Hurair Road and D89, Al Maktoum Road in Al Rigga area.

Visit Dubai designates the monument as a historical heritage at the junction of Umm Hurair Road and D89. The roundabout leads to Al Maktoum Bridge and is located in one of the commercial zones of Deira.

It is located in the center of Dubai, allowing it to be easily integrated with other attractions and districts in old Dubai.

Local areas include Al Rigga, Port Saeed, and Deira Commercial District in general. The landmark’s historical links with Dubai Creek and Al Maktoum Bridge are also very close.

How to Reach Deira Clock Tower

Public transport is also possible due to its location near several existing transport routes.

By Dubai Metro

These are both Dubai Metro stations on the Dubai Metro Red Line: Deira City Centre Metro Station and Al Rigga Metro Station.

According to the current transport information, Deira City Centre Metro Station is approximately 9 minutes walking distance from the landmark, while Al Rigga Metro Station is about 10 minutes away. The actual walking time may vary based on route and crossing the road.

It is good to use the RTA journey planner before travelling, as routes, pedestrian access, and service arrangements may change.

By bus

There are several bus routes that have stops near the Clock Tower Roundabout. Trains running in the current timetable, including those numbered C01, F04, 25, 27, and 53, and other stations, which are also a few minutes’ walk from the landmark, are available for use as both ‘transfers’ to and from the train service and as a local service.

As bus routes and stop arrangements can vary in Dubai, it is advisable to check the bus route using the official RTA journey-planning service on the day of travel.

By taxi or car

Visitors will note that the monument is located within a busy roundabout and primary junction area, and can be accessed directly by taxi.

The centre of the roundabout is not a normal roadside parking area and it is preferable to take advantage of an appropriate nearby parking facility and to arrive at the landmark on foot only if the pedestrian access is allowed.

Is Deira Clock Tower Free to Visit?

Yes. According to Visit Dubai, there is no entry fee to visit the attraction and it does not require any booking. It can be seen as it passes through the area or as seen from appropriate pedestrian vantage points along nearby streets.

The tower doesn’t have a traditional admission gate, as it is not a ticketed museum or enclosed attraction, but rather a public landmark.

However, there is a risk of visitors being injured around the roads. The tower is located at a major traffic junction, and photography should be conducted from safe and legal pedestrian space, NOT from the traffic island or trafficway.

What Can You See Around the Landmark?

The best visit is taken as part of a visit to Deira, and is not limited to a few hours of your time.

The tower is rather small. It is of value for its architecture, its history, and its relationship with its surrounding urban context.

Those interested in “old Dubai” can do this at the same time with other historic areas of Deira and traditional markets, and Dubai Creek. The landmark is also helpful for understanding the history of Dubai’s road network around the creek.

This makes it a particularly useful area for photography, as one can see the contrast between the low-rise commercial fabric of older Deira and the modern Dubai skyline as seen elsewhere.

Best Time to Photograph the Tower

Best Time to Photograph the Tower

The best time to photograph is not official because it is not a time-limited attraction, but rather a public urban area landmark.

In daylight, the form of the architecture and curved arches are more easily discerned outdoors. Natural light may be softer in the early morning or late afternoon than during the middle of the day.

Artificial lighting can also help to highlight the tower during the nighttime hours, creating a different look and feel.

Never photograph when there is traffic around you. The safest viewpoint is more important than getting a particular angle.

Why It Remains Important Today

The ongoing significance of the clock tower is its association to different phases of the development of Dubai.

It is a reflection of the era of the city’s growth, the further development of road networks, the consolidation of the city along Dubai Creek and the creation of a modern urban image. The tower is also an example of the way that a relatively simple civic building can become part of the collective memory.

The UAE Ministry of Culture considers it to be part of Dubai’s urban fabric and collective memory, and the Visit Dubai considers it to be a historical monument of Dubai’s swift commercial development.

In 2024, Dubai’s plans for heritage preservation also encompassed the landmark, which is also part of the city’s architectural history since the 1960s. The campaign is part of the official drive to conserve buildings that are a part of Dubai’s past.

Conclusion

The Deira Clock Tower holds special importance as it represents a specific period in the history of Dubai: the era when the city was rapidly expanding, and traditional trade along the creek was being integrated with the infrastructure of the city and the new road network.

Though its arches and central clock can be seen, the significance of its open form is all the more interesting when viewed in the context of its surroundings. The modest building has been a part of Dubai’s landscape for decades, for reasons including the commercial district known as Al Maktoum Bridge, the creek, and its subsequent rounds of restorations.

It’s a convenient and easy place for visitors to see. But for those who are interested in Dubai’s urban history, it has much more association with the old Dubai, which predates the modern-day skyscrapers.
